Published April 7, a new feature story in Hyperallergic explores myriad ways the collective reclaims alternative spiritualities in art history.
Elucidating the Esoteric with Hilma’s Ghost
Professor Sharmistha Ray’s artist collective, Hilma’s Ghost, was recently featured by Hyperallergic in “Elucidating the Esoteric with Hilma’s Ghost.” Hyperallergic staff reporter and School of Art alum Rhea Nayyar (BFA ’19) writes about how the collective co-founded by Ray and artist Dannielle Tegeder draws on spiritual and esoteric knowledge systems to recover the legacies of overlooked women artists. Nayyar details a number of ways — from public art to workshops and exhibitions — the collective’s collaborative artmaking process grew out of painter and occultist Hilma af Klint’s Guggenheim Museum retrospective, “Paintings for the Future,” in 2018. The collective, Nayyar writes, makes space for “extensive historical context while also offering a platform for cautious curiosity, practical inquiries, and the acknowledgment of doubt.”
SP-Arte Brazil
Also this month, Hilma’s Ghost exhibited with the prominent Mexican gallery Galería RGR at the 22nd edition of SP-Arte in São Paulo, Brazil, from April 8 to 12. Held annually at the Pavilion of the Bienal, SP-Arte is recognized as the leading art fair in Latin America. This year marked the collective’s third consecutive showing at the fair since 2024.
