Beginning next year, a vibrant glass mosaic mural will invite commuters through a new subway entrance as part of MTA’s extensive public art program.
Abstract Futures, a 600-square-foot glass mosaic mural by feminist artist collective Hilma’s Ghost will soon be permanently pulling into New York’s Grand Central Station. Co-led by Estella Loomis McCandless Assistant Professor of Art Sharmistha Ray and artist Dannielle Tegeder, Hilma’s Ghost has been awarded a prestigious MTA Arts & Design commission for a new subway entrance at the station through a competitive process overseen by a jury of art world professionals.
Set to be unveiled in May 2025, Abstract Futures features a progression of color palettes that guide viewers through a collection of archetypal symbols — from active reds and oranges to grounded green and brown, culminating in transcendent purple and blue. The designs tap into the shared experience of commuters from every background and provide a dynamic, contemporary experience to support the station rehabilitation. To install the work over the next several months, Hilma’s Ghost is collaborating with renowned mosaic fabricator Stephen Miotto of Miotto Mosaic.
The project will join over 400 artworks within MTA’s extensive public art program, known for transforming New York’s transit spaces into immersive art environments. Through its partnerships, MTA Arts & Design integrates art, music, poetry, and architectural details to create meaningful connections within the city’s transit system, enriching each commuter’s journey.
