“The Hour of the Star” at RGR Gallery brings together painting, video, and ritual in a feminist reclamation of mysticism and abstraction.
“The Hour of the Star,” the first solo exhibition from feminist collective Hilma’s Ghost — formed by Estella Loomis McCandless Assistant Professor of Art Sharmistha Ray and artist Dannielle Tegeder — opened April 12, 2025, at RGR Gallery in Mexico City. Curated by Gabriela Rangel, the exhibition bridges abstraction, ritual, and feminist activism, featuring geometric paintings, a video installation, and a collaborative Feminist Altar created with contributions from local artists.
Hilma’s Ghost draws from the mystical-feminine origins of abstract painting, reclaiming a spiritual lineage often dismissed by art history. Their circular wooden works echo protective Hex Signs used on Pennsylvania barns, blending symbols from science, folklore, and transcultural traditions. The collective’s practice seeks to expand perception through intuition, myth, and the metaphysical.
The exhibition’s title references Clarice Lispector’s novel The Hour of the Star, a meditation on the invisibility of marginalized women. Hilma’s Ghost channels that spirit into a new kind of visual language—one that honors the creative power of women, challenges dominant narratives, and opens space for healing, empathy, and transformation.
“The Hour of the Star” is on view through May 30, 2025.
