Published by Smithsonian Books, the catalog highlights two prints by Merrell alongside the collaborative MoonArk project from the Carnegie Mellon community.

The Art of Air and Space: Interpretations of Flight from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum is a new book featuring 275 artworks from the museum’s permanent art collection, including two prints by Professor Clayton Merrell.

Written by Carolyn Russo and published by Smithsonian Books, with a foreword by Jeff Koons, the book is organized into 13 thematic chapters that examine the relationship between human curiosity and the skies. Together, the collection presents a curated look at how creators across generations, from Francisco Goya and Georgia O’Keeffe to Norman Rockwell and Annie Leibovitz, have interpreted the human experience, wonder, and ambition surrounding flight and space exploration.

In addition to Merrell’s two prints, the book highlights the MoonArk, a monumental cultural payload project initiated by the late School of Art Professor Lowry Burgess in collaboration with School of Design Professors Mark Baskinger and Dylan Vitone.
