Today, our Senior Spotlight is focused on Sophia Videva!

Briefly describe your artistic practice.
I love writing short stories about characters in isolation and studying the complexity of tiny, routine moments. The majority of my work is in 3D digital animation, but I also enjoy writing short graphic novels and working with traditional printmaking.

What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on an animated short film following a collection of uncomfortable characters in a crowded café. The loose narrative focuses on these people through a series of connected vignettes, emphasizing their tics and mannerisms as they deal with their own personal problems. Just like a viewer people-watches and observes their surroundings by focusing in and out of a certain space, the camera moves between characters as they spend their time in the café.

How has your artistic practice changed since you started working entirely from home?
For the time being I’ve had to put my film on hold, but I decided to use the same narrative and continue it as a graphic novel. I’m using unconventional layouts and scattered imagery to create the cluttered and busy space in the story. I’ve missed working in this format and am happy to go back to a medium that I worked in when I first came to Carnegie Mellon. I’ve come full circle in my last semester!
