New York Times Reviews Professor Shimoyama’s Solo Show at The Warhol and “Paradox” at the Miller ICA

Art critic Martha Schwendener visited Pittsburgh to see how the city’s arts institutions are helping to process trauma following the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting. Her review covers the “Carnegie International” at the Carnegie Museum of Art, “Artists in Residence” at the Mattress Factory, “Paradox: The Body in the Age of AI” at CMU’s Miller ICA, Professor Devan Shimoyama‘s “Cry, Baby” at The Andy Warhol Museum, and “Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art From Paper” at the Frick Pittsburgh.

Schwendener writes of the show at the Miller ICA, “Located on a university campus and close to research laboratories devoted to information technology, ‘Paradox: The Body in the Age of AI,’ a show of 11 contemporary artists organized by Elizabeth Chodos at Miller ICA, offers a perfect context for considering humans of the future.”

Of “Cry, Baby,” she writes, “A collaged painting made with glitter, rhinestones and jewelry by Devan Shimoyama, an art professor at Carnegie Mellon University, hangs alongside the “Ladies and Gentlemen” paintings, creating a near-perfect pairing.”
