Hilma’s Ghost, a feminist artist collective led by Estella Loomis McCandless Assistant Professor of Art Sharmistha Ray and Dannielle Tegeder, exhibits in a new group show exploring spirituality and creative impulse.
Visitors to “When the Spirit Moves You,” a group exhibition at Geary Contemporary in Millerton, NY, have the chance to engage with both a painting and a limited-edition tarot deck from Hilma’s Ghost as part of the show’s immersive, reflective atmosphere. Hilma’s Ghost, the collective co-founded by Professor Sharmistha Ray, is featured among the show’s deconstructed altar of spiritual objects and artworks, which runs through December 15, 2024.
Curated by Elijah Wheat Showroom, the exhibition explores how artists and viewers alike are moved by unseen forces. Alongside Hilma’s Ghost, the show features sculptures, paintings, and installations from a range of artists, all centered on the theme of spiritual interaction. The exhibition’s innovative blend of contemporary art and mysticism earned a spotlight in The Financial Times, which highlighted the tarot deck’s interactive element and the show’s reverence for the unseen energies embedded in art-making.
