Professor Johannes DeYoung Presents “The Endless Mile” at LUMA Festival and AI Horizons

Posted on September 1, 2025

DeYoung will showcase his multimedia collaboration, blending experimental animation with live music, at two major events this September.

First staged September 5–6 at the 11th annual LUMA Festival in Binghamton, NY, The Endless Mile will feature a live collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Martin Shamoonpour, where Professor Johannes DeYoung’s animated audio-visual mural and computational artwork will respond and adapt to Shamoonpour’s audio input in real time. Founded in 2015, LUMA has grown into a regional cultural landmark, drawing approximately 30,000 attendees each year to experience architectural projection mapping, public art, and performance across the city.

Following LUMA, The Endless Mile will be presented September 11–12 at AI Horizons 2025 in Pittsburgh, PA, this time in collaboration with composer and CMU Music Professor Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh. Organized with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, AI Horizons gathers leaders from culture, business, government, and technology to explore human-centered approaches to artificial intelligence. DeYoung’s work joins a lineup that includes speakers such as Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, CMU President Farnam Jahanian, and Martial Hebert, Dean of CMU’s School of Computer Science.

DeYoung previously showcased The Endless Mile, at the 38th Stuttgarter Filmwinter Festival for Expanded Media in Stuttgart, Germany, on January 16–20.
