Walt Disney Animation Studios’ visit offered students a deep dive into the animation industry, providing practical advice and encouragement for those looking to follow in the footsteps of alumni who have interned and worked at the studio.

As part of the School of Art’s ongoing “Student / Futures” series, representatives from Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) visited Carnegie Mellon on October 1, providing students with insights on how to break into the competitive animation industry. The event, held in Hunt Library, featured Character Technical Director Foam Laohachaiaroon and Associate Manager of Talent Development Tyler McKim. They shared practical advice on crafting standout demo reels, portfolios, and resumes, offering a valuable opportunity for students to learn from industry leaders. The visit, a collaboration between the School of Art, IDeATe (Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology), and the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), gave students a firsthand look into the inner workings of one of the world’s premier animation studios.

“Student / Futures” is designed to help students explore creative careers and address the perennial question, “What do I do after I graduate?” Previous panels have explored how emerging media technologies like virtual and augmented reality are reshaping fields such as design, branding, entertainment, and more, and how students can navigate the art world’s institutions like galleries, art fairs, and museums. The series offers students networking opportunities with leaders in fields ranging from grassroots nonprofits to major corporations, showing the versatility of a BFA or BXA degree. Through these events, students gain insight into the skills employers seek — adaptability, innovation, collaboration, and responsiveness to feedback — qualities essential in today’s rapidly changing job market.
