Banu Cennetoğlu & Thomas Keenan

About the speakers:
Banu Cennetoğlu (b. 1970, Ankara; lives in Istanbul) is engaged in a wide range of cross-disciplinary practices. Her practice incorporates methods of archiving in order to question and challenge the politics of memory, as well as the production, distribution, and consumption of information. Cennetoğlu has had solo exhibitions at institutions such as K21 Ständehaus, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf; SculptureCenter, New York; Chisenhale Gallery, London; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn; Salonul de proiecte, Bucharest; and Kunsthalle Basel. She has participated in the Berlin, Istanbul, Liverpool, Gwangju, Athens, and Venice Biennales, as well as Manifesta 8 and documenta 14. She is the founder of BAS, an artist-run space in Istanbul dedicated to artists’ books and printed matter. In 2016, she was a guest at the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin program. Cennetoğlu is currently an advisor at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam.
Thomas Keenan is the Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Director of Human Rights Program at Bard College (Annandale-on-Hudson, USA). He received his B.A. from Amherst College and a Master of Philosophy and Ph.D. from Yale University. His research interests revolve around media and conflict; literary and political theory; humanitarianism and human rights; and violence and politics. In the field of human rights, Keenan has worked closely with the Soros Documentary Fund, WITNESS and The Journal of Human Rights.
