‘Surface: Skin & Scab – Porous Virality’ An Interview with Claudia Bitrán by Rebecca Shapass MFA ’23 was published in MAI: Feminism and Visual Culture‘s ninth issue “Photography and Resistance.” This issue of the journal is “focussed on photography as a medium employed to counter patriarchal powers, uncover abuse, or document social resistance, our selection of articles celebrates the courage of female and non-binary people from around the world.”
The featured dialogue is centered around Bitrán’s recent show ‘Stereotypies’ at Cristin Tierney Gallery in New York City. The show brought together three different bodies of work by the artist through the lens of compulsive repetition and prompted a conversation around virality, image consumption, and the euphoria/ horror of our own mortality.
