Each summer, the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art Pre-College Art program invites high school juniors and seniors to experience what it’s like to study at a top-ranked art school and world-class university. Over three or six weeks, you’ll live and work on campus, taking college-level courses taught by accomplished artists and professors.

College-Level Art Courses

Modeled after our undergraduate curriculum, the program blends traditional foundations — drawing, painting, sculpture — with contemporary practices like animation and computer imaging. You’ll experiment across media to sharpen your technical skills and explore the ideas behind your work. At the end of each session, students participate in a final group critique and stage an exhibition — giving you an opportunity to present your work, reflect on your growth, and celebrate what you’ve created.

With small class sizes, dedicated studio time, and personalized feedback from faculty, you’ll grow as an artist while building a competitive portfolio for college applications. Whether you’re planning to pursue art or exploring how creativity fits into your future, this program gives you the tools, support, and experience to take your thinking to the next level.

Your Creative Summer

There’s so much to experience in Pittsburgh outside the studio. You’ll be part of a vibrant Pre-College community, with opportunities to connect with fellow students, discover the city, and enjoy the full Carnegie Mellon experience. Evenings and weekends include optional trips to museums, galleries, movie nights, and even a Pittsburgh Pirates game. You’ll also have access to on-campus events and community activities run by residential staff, like game nights and workshops, to really experience what life is like as a CMU student.
