For the Summer 2019 issue of Film History, Professor Benjamin Ogrodnik published ““Forging an Alternative Cinema: Sally Dixon, the Film Section and the Museum-Based Media Center.” Sally Dixon was the founding curator of Film Section, later known as the Section of Film and Video and the Department of FIlm and Video, at the Carnegie Museum of Art from 1970-75. Film Section was one of the first museum-based film programs in the country.

Ogrodnik writes, “Dixon offers an important model for professional film curatorship, then and now. Basing her work on creativity and compassion, Dixon’s view of film-as-art achieved her stated aims of ‘condition[ing] people to openness. New ways of seeing.'”
