Adam Milner’s MFA ‘17 essay “Why Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Colorado Project Succeeded Despite Its Failure” was published in Hyperallergic about Christo and Jeanne Claude’s recently cancelled “Over the River”.
Christo and Jeanne Claude’s work, “Over the River”, took 20 years to conceptualize and after five years of controversial legal battles, it has culminated in the cancellation of the work. Though some might see this as a failure, Milner points out that the navigation through bureaucracy is equally important to Christo and Jeanne Claude’s practice as the actual execution of the works, which often only last a few days. By placing them in a canon of conceptual artists such as Jill Magid and Antonio Vega Macotela, Milner allows the reader to see beauty in the process rather than just the result.
