Professor Ragona’s essay, titled “Materiality, Lecture, and Game in the Work of Carolee Schneemann,” is an in-depth examination of “ABC We Print Anything—In The Cards (1976–77),” a collaborative event between Carnegie Museum of Art and Pittsburgh Filmmakers. The event was part of a three-day extravaganza that included two Schneemann performances; several film screenings; and lengthy discussions of her process across film, kinetic theater, and the “lecture” as an art form.
The essay was published just as MoMA PS1 opens the first comprehensive retrospective of Schneemann’s work titled “Kinetic Painting.” The exhibition spans the artist’s prolific six-decade career.
