Professor Julia Betts to Debut Solo Exhibition at the McDonough Museum of Art

Posted on December 9, 2024

“The Dams are Broken” explores fragility and freedom by blending painted depictions of personal belongings with vivid physical forms.

Adjunct Professor Julia Betts will debut her solo exhibition, “The Dams are Broken,” at the McDonough Museum of Art on January 21, 2025. Running until March 1, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the tension between structure and freedom, offering a poignant exploration of human fragility, desire, and transformation.

Betts’s mixed-media installations for the exhibition pair deeply personal narratives with surreal imagery to question the boundaries of self and environment. Through a compelling mix of abstract and recognizable forms, Betts examines the body as a fragile vessel of identity, balancing themes of containment and release. The opening reception will be held on February 28 from 5–7 PM.
