“Jacolby Satterwhite: Spirits Roaming the Earth,” curated by Professor Elizabeth Chodos and first presented at the Miller ICA, will travel to the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and be on view March 10 through August 13. This exhibition maps conceptual artist Jacolby Satterwhite’s extraordinary creative trajectory across multiple materials, genres, and modes of thinking.
Drawing on a broad set of real and fantastical references and diverse influences that include video gaming, art history, mythology, and contemporary visual culture, Satterwhite creates digital worlds of resilience, reinvention, and celebration. His intricately detailed animations and live action films of real and imagined worlds—populated by the avatars of Satterwhite and his friends—serve as the stage for the artist’s surreal and poetic world-building.
