Professor Johannes DeYoung exhibits new work in the latest installment of Virtual Dream Center, a curatorial project of artists Nicholas Steindorf and Jean-Baptiste Lenglet. The Virtual Dream Center platform reimagines spaces for art-making, viewing, and experience through immersive, virtual exhibition programs.
Virtual Dream Center 5.1 is a continuation of a Virtual Reality project that was included in the exhibition “Strange Loops,” curated by Johannes DeYoung and Federico Solmi (2019–20). The artists represented in Virtual Dream Center 5.1 contribute solo exhibition projects that separately explore boundaries of human experience at the precipice of the Novacence. Accelerated cultural and technological transformation stirs complex sentiments of optimism and anxiety. In a moment of cultural anomie, the works in this program serve as sites of expression, experience, and reflection, asking timely and challenging questions of cultures whose embrace of techno-fetishism, digital colonialism, and born obsolescence have placed the Anthropocene into precarious balance.
DeYoung’s contribution, “Big Hypnotic Eye Perversion,” projects a site of poetic reflection upon the aftermath of unregulated desire — a malady of the infinite.
