Following the expressions of white supremacist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic hatred and violence that emerged over the weekend in Charlottesville, it is important for the School of Art to restate its values and make clear those of the university. As interim President Farnam Jahanian stated to our community, “diversity and inclusion have a singular place among the values of this university. A diverse and inclusive community is the foundation for excellence in learning, research, creativity, and human development. Our commitment to that value stands at the center of our mission.” As Head of the School of Art and as a member of our community, I want to reaffirm our belief in these values and make clear our school’s unwavering support for the diversity of racial identities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities that are a foundation of our strengths as a culture. Art and artists often reside at the forefront of social change, and the School of Art continues to embrace its role in promoting such progress. As we plan to welcome our new and continuing students back to campus, I want to make clear our commitments, beliefs, and support for all: the School of Art is a HOME FOR EVERYONE, and we will not tolerate hate or allow fear to divide us.
