SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Kalup Linzy
DESCRIPTION:Kalup Linzy is a multidisciplinary performance artist whose works employ a variety of pop cultural forms to explore cultural identities and gender fluidity and boundaries. Working across various mediums—including video\, performance\, photography\, collage\, fashion\, television\, music\, and film—Linzy creates complex characters who are linked together to form an invented “family tree.” His work is found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Museum of Modern Art\, the Whitney Museum\, and The Studio Museum in Harlem\, among others. \nAll lectures are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Ropa Dope
DESCRIPTION:A project by Steven Montinar BFA ’21 and Karla Arrucha\, “Ropa Dope” presents wearable works that revolve around black and hispanic culture through the lens of fashion. The pieces are constructed out of objects of black and hispanic oppression\, hardship\, and constraint and made into items of style and paralleled positive usefulness. \n“Ropa Dope” plays off of the boxing term “rope-a-dope”; a word meaning to be trapped against a boxing ring’s ropes and dodging ineffective punches thrown by the opposer. Montinar and Arrucha “dodge the blows” of items within the two communities associated with oppressive events\, institutionalization\, and last resort solutions by creating alternative uses for them. These alternatives twist the negative into a positive ownership of obstructive histories. The play on words come from the Spanish word for “clothes” (ropa) and a word stemming from black society driven hip hop culture detonating “cool” (dope [informal]).

SUMMARY:Jamison Edgar & Philip Wesley Gates: Freshworks Presentation
DESCRIPTION:In a first-time collaboration\, theater artist Philip Wesley Gates and CMU School of Art MFA Candidate Jamison Edgar trace the way queer lives and memories travel between archival storage\, digital systems\, and the human body. Philip Wesley Gates’s work as a director\, performance maker\, and critical writer uses performance to activate collective understandings of connection and care. Jamison Edgar\, a project-based visual artist\, offers space in his own work to explore the potentialities of an embodied abstract-queer orientation. Collectively\, the artists remix strategies from their respective trained disciplines to create genre-bending experiences. \nThis in-progress performance is part of KST’s Freshworks Residency program\, which provides artists with space\, resources\, and support to explore new ideas and launch new projects. Presented in conjunction with Unblurred: First Fridays on Penn\, sponsored by the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative\, a joint program of the Bloomfield Garfield Corporation.

DESCRIPTION:Benedikt Groß is an antidisciplinary artist and designer. He works at the intersection of people\, their data\, technology and environments somewhere in the Bermuda triangle of data\, speculative and computational design. He is also Professor of Interaction Design at HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd\, and Director of Design at moovel Lab\, an independent research venture between Daimler-Benz and BMW\, whose mission is to explore the future of urban mobility. In fall 2019\, Benedikt is Visiting Professor in the CMU School of Design\, and Creator in Residence at the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry.

SUMMARY:STUDIO Lecture: Morehshin Allahyari
DESCRIPTION:Morehshin Allahyari is an artist\, activist\, writer\, and educator. She was born and raised in Iran and moved to the United States in 2007. Her work deals with the political\, social\, and cultural contradictions we face every day. She thinks about technology as a philosophical toolset to reflect on objects and as a poetic means to document our personal and collective lives and struggles in the 21st century. Morehshin is the co-author of The 3D Additivist Cookbook in collaboration with writer/artist Daniel Rourke. \nMorehshin has been part of numerous exhibitions\, festivals\, and workshops around the world including Venice Biennale di Archittectura\, New Museum\, The Whitney Museum of American Art\, Pompidou Center\, Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal\, Tate Modern\, Queens Museum\, Pori Museum\, Powerhouse Museum\, Dallas Museum of Art\, and Museum für Angewandte Kunst. She is the recipient of the leading global thinkers of 2016 award by Foreign Policy magazine. Recently she has been awarded major commissions by Rhizome\, New Museum\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, Liverpool Biennale\, and FACT.

SUMMARY:CAS Lecture: Liz Magic Laser
DESCRIPTION:Liz Magic Laser intervenes in semi-public spaces such as bank vestibules\, movie theaters and newsrooms\, involving collaborations with actors\, surgeons\, political strategists and motorcycle gang members. Her recent work explores the efficacy of new age techniques and psychological methods active in both corporate culture and political movements. \nLaser’s work has been shown at venues such as Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2019); Metro Pictures\, New York (2018) Malmö Konsthall\, Sweden (2017); the Swiss Institute (2016); the Whitney Museum of American Art (2015); Lisson Gallery\,London (2013); the Performa 11 Biennial\, New York (2011); and MoMA PS1\, New York (2010). She has had solo exhibitions at CAC Brétigny\, France (2017); Jupiter Artland Foundation\, Scotland (2017); Kunstverein Göttingen\, Germany (2016); Mercer Union\, Toronto (2015); Wilfried Lentz\, Rotterdam\, the Netherlands (2015); Various Small Fires\, Los Angeles (2015); Paula Cooper Gallery\, New York (2013) the Westfälischer Kunstverein\, Münster\, Germany (2013); and Mälmo Konsthall\, Mälmo\, Sweden (2012) among other places.In 2018\, she presented a commissioned daily performance and video installation at the Centre Pompidou\, Paris. SUMMARY:A Kilo of Green
DESCRIPTION:A Kilo of Green is greener than half a kilo of green.\nThe color red is red because it is neither orange nor purple.\nAt times\, color is a departure point. The material of color is supplemented by the language that surrounds it. For other times\, language falls short of the richness and particularity of color. The name of color cannot encompass the whole of what it means to be a color\, the symbols\, emotional associations\, and simple materiality of a particular pigment. Artworks that incorporate color by these means examine color as a destination.\nThe works in this show grapple with the potential of color without a name and color dependent on language. \nFeaturing work by Jamison Edgar\, Stephen Michaels\, John Carson\, Coco Allred\, Miranda Miller\, Jenn Gooch\, and Paola Mathus.
