SUMMARY:Sharing Our Stories: A Gathering of Local Indigenous Voices
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous peoples have called this land where three rivers meet their home for millennia. “Sharing Our Stories” is an opportunity to hear from some of them who call Pittsburgh and the broader Allegheny County home today. This gathering will include members of the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center (COTRAIC). For almost 50 years\, COTRAIC has provided significant programming in education\, employment support\, and cultural practices\, including an annual powwow held at the COTRAIC headquarters in Dorseyville\, PA. \nThis event is organized by the Center for Arts in Society. \nA limited number of childcare slots will be available on site (ages 2-12 only; staffed by Flexable).

DESCRIPTION:Kamal Sinclair serves as the Director of the Sundance Institute’s New Frontier Labs Program\, which supports artists working at the convergence of film\, art\, media and technology; as a Consultant to the Ford Foundation’s JustFilms program; and as artist and producer on Question Bridge: Black Males\, a transmedia art project. At New Frontier\, Sinclair develops and supports landmark projects in the evolution of story\, including experiments with VR\, AR\, and data as storytelling media. She was recently profiled by New York Magazine as a leading figure in the VR industry.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Sean Lynch
DESCRIPTION:Sean Lynch’s sculptures\, installations\, and multimedia work stems from an interest in the role that history\, especially forgotten history\, plays in our lives. Through extensive research\, Lynch uncovers the objects\, events\, and stories from the past that continue to shape societal structures and cultural identity. Lynch\, who is a visiting professor for the spring 2019 semester\, has had recent solo exhibitions at the Douglas Hyde Gallery\, Dublin; Charles H. Scott Gallery\, Vancouver; and the Rose Art Museum\, Boston; among others. In 2015\, he represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale. \nAll lectures are free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the East Campus Garage after 5:00pm or on Frew\, Margaret Morrison\, and Tech Streets after 6:00pm.

SUMMARY:CAS: Comics and Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the work of comics studies scholars\, as well as widely publicized examples of politicized comics\, has confirmed the medium’s aptitude for encouraging critical dialogue and political engagement. This talk will provide overviews and analyses of three German-language comics that approach issues of identity in contemporary Germany. Through a variety of narrative techniques and visual tools\, which will be analyzed more closely in the talk\, the comics artists consider issues of voice\, identity\, dominant culture\, and traces of colonialism awakened by shifts in definitions of German national identity and the German cultural landscape as a result of mass migration. \nLynn M. Kutch is professor of German at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania\, where she teaches all levels of German courses as well a First Year Seminar course dealing with Global Citizenship. Additionally\, she is the newly named Coordinator of Undergraduate Research and Creativity at KU. Her research interests have focused on German crime fiction\, representations of the European refugee crisis in art and pop culture\, and comics studies. Her article on teaching a graphic version of Kafka’s Metamorphosis won the AATG’s Unterrichtspraxis Best Article Prize for 2015. She also published the collected volume Novel Perspectives on German-language Graphic Novels: History\, Pedagogy\, Theory in 2016. She is a co-founder and co-coordinator of the German Studies Association’s Comics Studies Network.

SUMMARY:IDeATe Event: Turning Jewels Into Water
DESCRIPTION:“Turning Jewels Into Water” is a live electronic duo led by Indian-born drummer/producer Ravish Momin along with Haitian electronic percussionist Val Jeanty. They seamlessly blend futuristic turntables\, ritual chants\, polyrhythmic percussion\, live loops and synth melodies along with rhythms inspired by global dance music. Momin and Jeanty will bring their workshop and performance to the IDeATe Media Lab (HL A10A) on Monday\, March 18th at 6:30 p.m. \nTheir collaboration\, rooted in improvisation\, evokes the esoteric realms of the creative subconscious. Drawing from the voodoo religion\, Val recreates the ancient rhythm and pulse of Haiti through digital beats\, while Momin\, whose own musical background is rooted Indian\, North African and Middle-Eastern traditions\, has developed an original blend of electro-acoustic beats\, drawing together the improvisational traditions in Jazz and Indian folk music. Together\, they employ cutting-edge music-technological tools such as acoustic drums outfitted with Sensory Percussion triggers\, Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) drum pads and Smart Fabric MIDI Controllers\, but still emphasize the ritual aspects of creating music in the digital realm. \nMomin will discuss the heavy influence of working with legendary saxophonist Kalaparush from the Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians\, and his own adaptation of their motto of “ancient to the future.” He will explore various approaches to bridging acoustic instruments and digital realms. He will demonstrate using Ableton Live Software and various MIDI and MIDI/USB controllers in order to integrate live electronic drums with laptop based electronic sounds. He will also demonstrate creating spontaneous arrangements\, layering rhythms\, adding effects and shifting between complex time signatures. He will discuss performance and compositional strategies for using LIVE in an improvisational setting. He will also discuss creative approaches to MIDI mapping in order to achieve specific performance goals. \nJeanty will focus on the powerful role of improvisation in spiritual self-expression. She will present Vodou-Electro through both analog (live drums) and digital (Korg Wavedrum) percussion. Participants will learn historical and foundational elements of Haitian music such as basic Vodou drum patterns (Nago-Legba/Petro-Gede.) She will focus on the process of creating rhythmic arrangements and loops with the participants. They will also be guided in the exploration of sound and textures through DJ turntablism and layering the soundscape with samples\, melodies\, chants\, and prayers. Furthermore\, she will demonstrate the technical elements of basic DJ techniques such as cuts\, baby scratches\, transforms and fading.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: Beverly Semmes
DESCRIPTION:Beverly Semmes works across sculpture\, painting\, drawing\, film\, photography\, and performance to probe the complexities of the female body and its representation. Her ongoing Feminist Responsibility Project (FRP) transforms images from Penthouse magazines with rough brushstrokes of paint to create pools of color suggestive of pots. Semmes has had solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1\, ICA Philadelphia\, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art\, among others. \nOrganized in collaboration with Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie International\, 57th Edition\, 2018. \nAll lectures are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Kyle Machulis has been called the world’s leading authority on open-source teledildonics. He has worked as both designer and reverse-engineer on a wide range of interactive technologies\, including sex toys\, erotic furniture\, personal health devices\, self driving cars\, electrostimulation systems\, and biometric monitors. Machulis is the founder of Buttplug.io\, a project to design\, develop and promote open-source standards and software libraries for the control of intimate hardware.

SUMMARY:Peter Sheehan: Just Don't Smile
DESCRIPTION:“Just Don’t Smile” contains an array of games collaboratively made\, but in some sense involving third year fine arts undergrad Peter Sheehan. Some are premiering for the first time here\, including “Pecking Order” and “One Million Games +.” The exhibition features eight games\, and in addition\, the animation “Wario World War III.” The work sets out to analyze the rule based systems that games use to funnel players into revenue streams\, while also considering how similar systems are used to funnel people into controlled ways of thinking. The exhibition is supported in part by funding from the Carnegie Mellon University Frank-Ratchye Fund For Art @ the Frontier. \nOpening Reception: March 22\, 6-9pm
