SUMMARY:Carrie Schneider: Reading Women
DESCRIPTION:Work by CMU alumna Carrie Schneider ushers in the 2018/19 academic year at the Miller Institute for Contemporary Art. The exhibition\, “Reading Women\,” explores the power of reading\, studying\, and being absorbed by knowledge. In the artist’s words\, the work “reveals a constellation of influences among my creative peers.” This series is a rhizomatic view of thinkers who contribute to the intellectual capital of the artist’s community. “It’s a man’s world\,” as the saying goes\, but this exhibition offers a countervailing proposition. The ideas in these books shape thought\, and by shaping thought\, form a world made entirely by women. In repeating the same elegant and matter-of-fact gesture the exhibition forces us to consider what a world would look like if we were all reading women. \nAutumn House Press Reading featuring Adriana Ramirez\, Sherrie Flick\, Judith Vollmer\, and Toi Derricotte: Fri\, Sept 7\, 6-8pm \nExhibition Reception: Fri\, Sept 7\, 7-8pm

SUMMARY:CAS Lecture: Theresa Devine
DESCRIPTION:Atelier production of artwork is the activity of “practice as research” which holds the belief that\, unless praxis\, the process by which a theory is explored\, can be directly experienced — assessment is made by way of documentation that reconstructs the practice. While this type of scholarship is valuable\, studio work has opportunities to ascertain new creative paths. It is an adventurous journey and\, without the studio experience\, a complete understanding of theory is not possible. Theresa Devine talks about explorations in her studio and the discoveries of hidden knowledge she has made in building her body of work\, Ce n’est pas un jouet: This is not a toy. \nTheresa Devine\, MFA\, is an Associate Professor in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University. Theresa received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking at Texas A & M University Corpus Christi in 1991 and her MFA in Painting at University of Houston in 1994. She is an interdisciplinary artist and a scholar exploring the relationship of games\, play\, and art to discover how they can be activated for social change. She is driven by the belief that art and play transforms people on an elemental level\, and if these components permeated humanity at its foundation\, the world would be a place where creativity\, sharing\, inclusion\, justice\, deep wisdom\, critical thinking\, and nuanced problem-solving were deeply valued. An overarching goal of hers is the development of works that seek to establish an understanding of how play can promote human understanding and growth\, through an approach that is playful in nature\, and fine art in execution. She believes that through a greater understanding of art and play\, a road to creating a more just and inclusive world can be exposed and that this path can be opened up for others to make discoveries of their own. \nThis lecture is presented by the Center for Arts in Society.

SUMMARY:CAS Lecture: Peter Burr
DESCRIPTION:This lecture by School of Art alumnus Peter Burr (BFA ’02) takes a trans-media look at a history of experimental architecture from the etchings Giovanni Piranesi to the collages of Archigram to the generative dungeons of D&D. \nPeter Burr creates images and environments that hover on the boundary between abstraction and figuration. In recent years he devoted himself to exploring the concept of an endlessly mutating labyrinth. His practice often engages with tools of the video game industry in the form of immersive cinematic artworks. These pieces have been presented internationally by various institutions including Documenta 14\, Athens; MoMA PS1\, New York; and The Barbican Centre\, London. He has been recognized through grants and awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Creative Capital Grant\, and a Sundance New Frontier Fellowship. \nThis lecture is presented by the Center for Arts in Society.

SUMMARY:Object + Body
DESCRIPTION:Carnegie Mellon University Advanced Sculpture students\, taught by Professor Heidi Wiren Bartlett\, will take over Future Tenant for one night only\, Friday\, September 21. Their exhibition\, “Object + Body\,” considers how occupying space is a radical act. What is the relationship between one’s body\, actions\, activism\, and everyday life? What about the relationship between the physical body and the social body? \nThe students presenting work are: Adrienne Cassel\, Toby Donoghue\, Pat Miller Gamble\, Liza Goncharova\, Darya Kharabi\, Judy Li\, Miranda Miller\, and Olivia Yi. \nThrough multidisciplinary practices\, these artists explore the body’s dual roles of being sculpture and creating sculpture. \nTheir work may challenge previous notions of sculpture and could include props and prosthetics\, stage sets and choreographies. \nHistorically\, such a collision of concepts\, materials\, and disciplines has been called intermedia. The term was born in 1966 when Fluxus artist and theorist Dick Higgins used it to describe artists who erase and transcend traditionally-held definitions of art. \nIntermedia is in between. Intermedia links worlds. \nNOTE: This event will take place at 811 Penn Avenue\, right beside the Future Tenant Space
