SUMMARY:James “Yaya” Hough & Let’s Get Free
DESCRIPTION:About the speakers:\nJames “Yaya” Hough has been heavily involved for more than a decade with Mural Arts Philadelphia\, creating more than 50 works that have been installed at the State Correctional Institution–Graterford and the State Correctional Institution–Phoenix. In 2019\, as part of a program supported by the Art for Justice Fund and Fair and Just Prosecution\, Hough was selected to be the inaugural artist-in-residence at the Office of the District Attorney of Philadelphia. His work was included in Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration\, curated by Nicole R. Fleetwood\, which opened at MoMA PS1\, New York\, and traveled to the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts\, Birmingham\, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center\, Cincinnati. \nLet’s Get Free: The Women and Trans Prisoner Defense Committee (founded 2013\, Pittsburgh\, PA) is a group working to end perpetual punishment\, build a pathway out of the prisons back to our communities through commutation reform\, support successful possibilities for people formerly and currently incarcerated\, and shift to a culture of transformative justice. The group was formed when Avis Lee\, Charmaine Pfender\, Donna Hill\, and etta cetera all participated in One Billion Rising\, a global day of action to end violence against women. Lee and Pfender\, who are both serving life without parole sentences\, have each spent over thirty years incarcerated for situations that occurred when they were in their late teens. Let’s Get Free prioritizes working with women and trans prisoners\, whose experiences are often left out in conversations about mass incarceration; works to build relationships and community across prison walls; is guided by people in prison; uses art as an organizing tool; and educates to shift cultural understandings around harm\, healing\, and justice. The group has expanded its community on both sides of the walls through its prison visiting program\, Operation Break Bread\, regular newsletters\, annual art show\, community events\, participation in the statewide Coalition to Abolish Death by Incarceration\, and persistent pressure challenging the outdated and dysfunctional commutation process in Pennsylvania. Motivated by an ethos of reducing harm and violence\, Let’s Get Free is committed to bringing people home. \nAbout the series:\nRefractions is a series of in-person conversation-based readings\, artist talks\, and performances that position artists in the 58th Carnegie International in conversation with people across disciplines\, practice\, and geography. Designed to expand the context and experience of the exhibition\, these live conversations will ignite the imagination with language\, music\, histories\, cultural reflection\, personal narratives\, and more. DESCRIPTION:About the speakers:\nterra0 (founded 2016) is a group of developers\, theorists\, and artists exploring the creation of hybrid ecosystems in the technosphere. The group’s first work\, the terra0 whitepaper (2016)\, based on research in areas of DLT technology\, ecology\, and economics\, proposes technologically augmented ecosystems that are able to act as agents in their own right. terra0’s artistic practice in recent years has focused on conducting experiments that take up\, evaluate\, and critically reflect on inherent claims of the first white paper. terra0 has been exhibited at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia; Ars Electronica\, Linz; Lyon Biennale; Drugo More\, Rijeka; Furtherfield Gallery\, London; Schinkel Pavillon\, Berlin; transmediale\, Berlin; and Vienna Biennale\, among others. \nSohrab Mohebbi is the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International. He also serves as curator-at-large at SculptureCenter in New York\, and in 2022\, was appointed Director of SculptureCenter. Before joining that organization in 2018\, he was associate curator at REDCAT in Los Angeles and curatorial fellow at the Queens Museum. He is an advisor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and has organized exhibitions and programs for the Walker Art Center\, Minneapolis\, MN; High Desert Test Sites\, Joshua Tree\, CA; SALT\, Istanbul; and the Center for Historical Reenactments\, Johannesburg\, South Africa. He received an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a BFA in photography from Tehran Art University. \nMohebbi has organized solo exhibitions by Banu Cennetoğlu\, Fiona Connor\, Tishan Hsu\, Hassan Khan\, John Knight\, and Falke Pisano\, among others. His group exhibitions include Searching the Sky for Rain (2019)\, It is obvious from the map (2017; co-curated by Thomas Keenan) and Hotel Theory (2015; with Ruth Estévez)\, which received The Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award in 2013.
